Capturing Interest

Don't underestimate the power of getting students interested before they even watch the show/movie. We want our classes to be something that students looks forward to, so getting them engaged with your text before they ever watch with help you keep their interest once they feel challenged, which often happens the first time they're exposed to these texts.
Additionally, make it very clear to students why you'll be watching TV/Netflix/Hulu in class. Actively working with these texts will help them in all modes of the language and will help them better understand the culture associated with the target language. I use this article and activity to set the purpose for viewing.

Classroom Decorations

Posters of Characters (students LOVE these and they even add some of their own as we go along)
Fun Phrases from the series/movie

Build Anticipation

Talk it up! I tell my classes weeks in advance that we're going to be doing/watching something really cool that they're going to love!
I'll mention it to other grade levels to what we're doing in class so that it creates a little bit of a buzz.

Reviews & Tabloids

Students love learning about the actors that play their favorite characters and how what they watch in class relates to real life in Hispanic culture.
